How do I take CBD?

It can be challenging for new users to know the best way to take CBD. Everyone responds to CBD at different levels. There is not a one-size-fits-all set of instructions for how to take it or how much to take. However, there are two main factors you may want to consider when evaluating how to take CBD:

  1. Choosing the best type of CBD product for your lifestyle.
  2. Finding the dosage that provides you with your desired benefits. There are many health and wellness benefits of CBD.

Each type of product delivers CBD to your body in a different way. Since the body absorbs CBD differently from each method of use, the amount of CBD needed to achieve your desired benefits may change if you switch products. CBD oil products that you take under the tongue and swallow are currently the most popular among Daddy Burt users.

Some of the most popular types of CBD products include:

  • oil/sublingual
  • cream/lotion
  • premade edibles
  • pill/capsule
  • pet products
  • vape

Before taking CBD, it is important to ask yourself “what benefits I am searching for”. If you have a specific goal already in mind, it may help to track your progress. We provide a downloadable easy to use health log that you can use to monitor before and while taking CBD. Tracking your progress will help you determine the effectiveness of your CBD.

When To Take CBD

Naturally, the best time to take CBD is when it fits into your normal routine and schedule. This helps you build consistency and makes sure you benefit from CBD every day. Because CBD has no intoxicating or psychoactive properties, you can take it at any point in the day and still focus on your responsibilities.

People notice that the benefits of CBD usually last around 4-8 hours. As a result, people will often split their daily CBD serving into two times– morning and evening. This helps you experience the benefits of CBD for the majority of the day.

How Much CBD Should I Take?

Daddy Burt's CBD oil sitting on kitchen counterCBD does not have a standard amount that you should take. For new users, finding the right amount of CBD is sometimes a bit of a learning process. We wish that we could offer you a simple CBD dosage calculator, but it isn’t quite that easy. It may take some exploring to identify how much CBD is needed for you to feel the benefits you desire. However, it is important to note that you can feel comfortable experimenting and testing out different amounts of CBD. According to medical research¹, humans can tolerate doses of up to 1500mg/day (60x the common serving).

When you begin taking CBD, start low and gradually increase until you feel your desired benefits. First-time users often start with 15mg of CBD a day, taking half in the morning and the other half in the evening. After seeing how you respond to the first few servings you can adjust from there. For daily CBD users, taking 25mg/day is the most commonly reported amount for their desired benefits. With this and your personal goals in mind, you should explore trying CBD.

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF CBD PRODUCTS?

How do you choose between the types of CBD products? How long does it take to feel the effects of a CBD product? How long do the effects of CBD last for this product? Determining which product is best for you starts with focusing on your wellness goals and your lifestyle. Each type of CBD product has its unique qualities, so let us take a look at a basic overview of the five most popular CBD product types.

CBD Oil – Tincture, Sublingual, & Oil Drops

CBD oil is currently the most common way to take CBD. To take CBD oil, fill the dropper to the desired amount and place the drops under your tongue. Hold the CBD oil under your tongue for 60 seconds so that it is absorbed through the surfaces in your mouth and gets into the bloodstream.

There are a few different things you need to know in order to get the right amount of CBD from an oil sublingual product.

  1. The total amount of CBD mg in the product
  2. Size of the bottle (ml or oz)
  3. Size of the dropper (ml).

Typically, a dropper holds 1ml of CBD oil with markings for .25, .50, .75, and 1ml. You can use these markings to be precise with how much you are consuming.

Start Time: Benefits are typically felt in ~ 15 minutes.

Duration: Benefits will typically last for ~ 4-6 hours.

CBD Edibles – Gummies, Candies, Pre-Made Edibles, & Pet Treats

Eating a pre-made CBD edible is a casual and easy method of consuming CBD. When the CBD product is ingested, it will be absorbed through your metabolic and digestive system. For pre-made edible items, the serving size and amount of CBD per serving should be labeled on the packaging. Simply read the amount per serving and take the serving size that provides the mg of CBD you desire.

Start Time: Effects are typically felt in ~ 1 hour.

Duration: Effects will typically last for ~ 6 hours.

CBD Cream – Lotions, Gels, & Topicals

Applying CBD products directly to the skin as a CBD lotion or CBD cream are a popular method for body part specific usages. To use CBD cream, simply rub the product on your skin at the site of the desired benefits and the CBD will slowly be absorbed through your skin. It is difficult to get an exact measurement of how much CBD you are getting from a cream product. It is recommended to be generous with the application several times a day to maintain the desired effects.

Start Time: Benefits are typically felt in ~ 1 hour.

Duration: Benefits will typically last for ~ 6-8 hours.

CBD Pills – Capsules, Tablets, & Pills

Pills or capsules are an easy way to add CBD into your daily routine. This form of CBD is great if you are frequently on the go and want an easy way to transport your daily supplements. When swallowed, CBD is absorbed through your digestive system at a moderate pace. For capsules, tablets, and pills, the amount of CBD mg per serving will be labeled on the container. Simply read the amount and take the applicable number for your desired CBD mg level.

Start Time: Benefits are usually felt in ~ 30 minutes.

Duration: Benefits will usually last for ~ 6 hours.

CBD Vape – E-cig & Vaporizer juice cartridges

Inhaling CBD through a vape or electronic cigarette is one of the fastest methods of absorption. The CBD is absorbed in your lungs and enters your bloodstream quickly. Vaping is the least accurate method for identifying the amount of CBD consumed. Vaping can also be problematic for overall health. Additives that help create the vape smoke-effect can introduce toxins to the lungs and body. The risks of vaping additives are too hazardous for Daddy Burt Hemp Co. to comfortably offer these products to our customers.

Start Time: Effects are usually felt in a few minutes.

Duration: Effects will usually last for ~ 4 hours.

Drug Testing for CBD

Will taking CBD show up on a drug test? Very unlikely.

urine samples in flasks for drug testing at a laboratoryMost drug tests (using either hair or urine samples) do not test for CBD. Instead, they test for THC. THC is the chemical responsible for the high feeling and what most drug tests monitor. Quest Diagnostics², a leading drug testing company, states that they don’t offer to test for CBD as part of their employer drug testing program.  If you regularly get drug tested for work, we recommend taking CBD products that are THC free.

Therefore, it is important to note the difference between the full spectrum and isolate CBD products. Full spectrum CBD products have less than 0.3% THC, whereas CBD isolates (or crystalline) products are THC free.

Drug Testing For THC

Because CBD has a different chemical structure than THC, it is very unlikely that pure CBD would show on a drug test. However, CBD products that include trace amounts of THC, like many full spectrum CBD products, if taken in large quantity may produce a positive result for THC on a drug screen.

Tests for THC typically follow a set of protocols established by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)³. SAMHSA sets a standard for a THC positive urine test at greater than 50 ng/ml with a secondary screen to confirm and rule out false positives. It would take a significant amount over a typical daily serving of full spectrum CBD to trigger a positive result.

Each of us has personal considerations when it comes to drug testing. It is worth remembering that if you are restricted from taking illegal drugs and ingest full spectrum CBD products you may fail another test. You could fail a lie detector test if you know there is a presence of THC in your product, and you are asked the question, “Have you taken or ingested any illegal substances prohibited by our employment agreement or legal commitment”.

How Does CBD Make You Feel

CBD doesn’t get the user ‘high’.  Instead, it provides many users with a calming effect without altering consciousness or awareness. Many people who take CBD report improved mood, feelings of relaxation, and higher levels of general wellness. One user of Daddy Burt’s CBD products described the feeling as, “CBD feels like when I receive a really nice compliment, but it lasts all day. It gives me a sense of calm, makes me feel relaxed, and like I am ready to take on the day. It is a great feeling to have in a bottle.”

Side Effects of CBD

Side effects of using CBD are rare and minor. Users report very little downside to CBD products. According to the World Health Organization (WHO)⁵, CBD is safe, non-toxic, non-addictive, and doesn’t get the user high. Although rare, some individuals may experience minor CBD side effects. The following have been reported as side effects of various medical studies on taking CBD: changes in appetite, changes in mood, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, anxiety, nausea, dry mouth, vomiting, and fatigue.

CBD is not physically addictive and doesn’t present any withdrawal concerns, even after consistent long-term use. There are zero documented overdoses associated with the use of CBD. The WHO states, “CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential… To date, there is no evidence of public health-related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”
